Auckland, New Zealand – March 29, 2023 Spark announced the 3G network shutdown towards the end of 2025. The upcoming closure is a significant milestone for New Zealand’s IoT industry. It will free up limited radio spectrum that will enable Spark’s 5G roll out in rural Aotearoa and pave the way for new 5G capabilities that will enable businesses to innovate and become more productive and sustainable through technology.
Spark has been working closely with M2M One NZ to help ensure a seamless transition for its customers. In a statement, Martin Ryan, M2M One NZ Strategic Partner Lead emphasised the importance of assessing IoT devices and planning for the network closure. “The upcoming 3G closure presents a unique opportunity for businesses to rethink their IoT strategies and invest in future-proof solutions. We’re committed to helping our customers navigate this transition smoothly and efficiently.”
Spark IoT Lead, Michele Wong said Spark (then Telecom) first introduced 3G in Aotearoa back in 2009, “Since then, mobile technologies have continued to advance, with the introduction of 4G, 5G and IoT networks, which has brought improvements in speed and latency.
“Our 4G network reaches 98% of New Zealanders and only 4% of our total network data traffic is running over 3G so the vast majority of our customers won’t notice any change. We do, however, have some of our IoT customers using devices and modules that are not compatible with 4G. We will continue to support their transition away from 3G reliant technologies over the next two years.”
To help customers prepare for the upcoming 3G network closure, M2M One NZ recommends:
- Assessing the impact on current IoT devices and applications.
- Identifying devices that rely on 3G connectivity and creating an inventory.
- Developing an upgrade plan for affected devices, including budgeting and timelines.
- Exploring alternative connectivity options, such as 4G or 5G networks, and considering long-term scalability.
- Engaging with expert support from M2M One NZ to ensure a smooth transition.
