What are IoT devices?
IoT stands for “Internet of Things”, and IoT devices are products that are designed to utilise an internet connection beyond the devices you’d traditionally use.
We’ve seen a consistent increase in the number of IoT devices over the last 10 years, and the places in which these devices are being used are constantly changing. A few examples of where IoT devices are used include:
Industrial applications
Industrial IoT devices quickly became an important part of global industry, and it’s estimated that over 90% of industrial organisations have adopted IoT technology solutions. A few examples of how IoT devices are used in industrial applications include:
- Asset Tracking: GPS and IoT tech works hand in hand to allow organisations to track their assets anywhere in the world, with IoT sensors adding layers of data beyond just location information.
- Inventory Management: Inventory and stock loss has long been a headache for industrial accountants, but with IoT devices revolutionising supply chain management, this means that real time monitoring of assets using IoT sensors has increased the visibility of assets which is crucial in inventory management.
- Environmental Safety: With the industrial world on notice when it comes to mitigating climate change, organisations are looking more and more towards IoT solutions to improve efficiencies in this area. Whether it’s monitoring emissions, or controlling dangerous assets remotely, IoT products have revolutionised the way organisations tackle their environmental safety obligations.
Healthcare
IoT Devices have become a key part of patient care. From being able to remotely monitor patients, to being able to collect more detailed and greater amounts of data are just some of the things that smart IoT devices can provide.
- Wearables: Wearables such as fitness and activity trackers as well as medical grade wearables ensure that patient data is provided seamlessly to healthcare professionals.
- Remote Monitoring: Remote patient monitoring IoT devices help healthcare professionals to keep track of their patient’s conditions in real time. This is especially useful in aged care and assisted living situations.
