Easing the way of emergency vehicles responding to emergencies in QLD.
Solution:
Emergency Vehicle Priority (EVP) Technology enables automatic green lights for emergency vehicles in Brisbane and Gold Coast traffic.
The intelligent system uses computer-aided dispatch, GPS and traffic management information to determine the location of the emergency vehicle and the time taken to reach the next set of traffic lights. Once the emergency vehicle has passed, the traffic lights will return to normal sequence, minimising traffic disruptions.
The product used is the GX400 Sierra Wireless router with a custom application on board and Hirschmann antennas. M2M Connectivity was involved in writing the initial application which was funded by the Public Safety Business Agency (PBSA), formerly the Department of Community Safety. The PBSA is the central agency that works with all the emergency service groups including Fire Brigade, Ambulance, and Police. After successful trialling, PBSA rolled the EVP solution to a number of areas throughout QLD.
The solution has been installed mainly in ambulance fleets and some installed in fire trucks and police vehicles. The first stage roll out to all council controlled intersections was completed in 2015, and the project is currently continuing to be implemented across Queensland’s wider Emergency Services network.
